When I returned to work, after my second maternity leave, I completely burned out. Within a few months, I became a crazy, tired, zombie-person but felt too vulnerable to share my challenges.
So, as my mental and physical health deteriorated, the job I once loved, became unsustainable. And like many women, I was forced to do something I never imagined, downshift.
The maternal health crisis is huge. We now hear about devastating losses among pregnant and new moms in the US but the problem extends well beyond the baby shower or our children’s first birthdays. We take a disproportionate, long-term hit to our health.
A lot of us can’t afford to put our careers on the deep freeze, we need to grow. But this isn’t a work/life balance, time management or productivity problem. The lack of control over our time, at home or in the workplace comes from social conditioning and systems limitations. It undermines our mental, physical, and financial health. And the pressure is increasing. So, rates of anxiety and depression among Moms continue to climb.
